Where is Plaka?

An ancient neighborhood in Athens, Greece and the city's oldest section, first settled in the 5th century BC. It is characterized by narrow alleyways, neoclassical mansions, and colorful bougainvillea.

The Plaka district is home to many historic sites, and home to many artists, poets and creatives, including the Ancient Agora, the Acropolis Museum, and the Temple of Olympian Zeus, as well as numerous restaurants, tavernas, and beautiful cafes. Its busy pedestrian streets are lined with souvenir shops and galleries, and its cobblestone alleys are lined with traditional Greek restaurants and tavernas.

Strolling through the Plaka neighborhood, visitors will find an abundance of traditional Greek culture. In this area, many Greek restaurants serve traditional Greek dishes such as moussaka, souvlaki, and spanakopita as well as the beloved dessert loukoumades. The neighborhood is also home to several orthodox churches, such as the Church of Panagia Kapnikarea and the Church of Agios Dimitrios Loumbardiaris.

The neighborhood is also a great place to find souvenirs. From traditional Greek pottery and jewelry to souvenir shops selling t-shirts and postcards, you can find the perfect memento for your trip to Athens.

If you are looking for a unique experience in Athens, the Plaka neighborhood is the perfect place to visit. With its vibrant culture, delicious food, and abundance of history, you will have an unforgettable day strolling and exploring!

Where is Psyri?

Athens' young love affair with Psyri

On Monastiraki's north-eastern side, Psyri is just five minutes from its metro station. Plaka area (right beneath the Acropolis) is also within walking distance. During the weekends, it is especially crowded with young people and one of the best places in Athens for a night out. At daytime, it's still a quiet place where people work and live, so you can stroll around and do a little shopping in a relaxed atmosphere, but at night, the streets become crowded with people eating, dancing, and enjoying themselves.

Additionally, the neighborhood is known for street art and several art galleries, often compared to New York's Soho. You must visit Psyri to experience an authentic and almost unexplored side of Athens.

Top 5 things to do in Psyri

1. Check out the local street art. In Psyri, art abounds! Don't forget to stop by at least a couple of art galleries featuring young artists. In this neighborhood, you'll have plenty of options to choose from, but these two art galleries are not to be missed:

  • AD Gallery (3, Pallados Street): displaying local and international avant-garde art.

  • a.antonopoulou.art (20, Aristofanous Street): an art gallery dedicated to young contemporary Greek and international artists.

2. Discover authentic Greek recipes and local products in the Museum of Greek Gastronomy. Rather than an actual museum, it's a collection of temporary and permanent exhibitions highlighting local gastronomy through traditional recipes, ingredients, illustrations, and tastings.

3. Visit Pittaki Street, one of Athens' most unconventional streets. Psyri's fairy-tale atmosphere will be sure to captivate you, especially at night! In Pittaki Street, there is a beautiful lighting effect created by hundreds of lamps in any shape, size, and color.

4. Shop on Evripidou Street for gastronomic specialties, spices, nuts, and dried fruits, and local products full of bright colors and exotic scents. This old-fashioned wooden store full of spices and herbs of the highest quality is Elixir (41, Evripidou Street).

5. Enjoy some shopping! Those who love to shop will find a variety of independent, creative small boutiques in Psyri! Our favourite is Emilie Store, right by our doorstep. It is a female-owned concept store supporting Greek designers and housing a curated selection of clothing, accessories and jewelry!
